Watching your child have a seizure is one of the most frightening things a parent will ever go through. And what comes next is often just as hard.
You end up in the emergency room. Your child gets an EEG. Maybe an MRI. And then, usually, one of two things happens.
Either the tests come back clear, and you're told there's nothing to find, even though you know exactly what you saw with your own eyes.
Or the tests confirm what you feared, and you leave with a prescription for one, two, sometimes three medications, along with a list of side effects that would concern any parent.
We meet families in this exact place every week. Exhausted. Frightened. Deeply grateful for the emergency care that kept their child safe. And at the same time, quietly wondering whether anyone will ever ask what started all of this in the first place.
If that's where you are right now, please hear this: you aren't overreacting, and you aren't imagining what you saw. You're a parent asking a reasonable question, and that question deserves a real answer.
A Story That Changed How We Look at Seizures
Dr. Tony Ebel, founder of the PX Docs network, has been open for years about why this became his life's work.
In May of 2009, his infant son Oliver experienced a traumatic birth that led to a brain injury and seizures. Oliver was flown to a Level III NICU. He needed multiple surgeries and spent days on heart-lung bypass. The neurology team told the family Oliver would likely need two to three seizure medications for the rest of his life.
Dr. Tony and his wife understood exactly how serious Oliver's injury was. They were also deeply concerned about what years of medication might mean for a developing brain. So alongside the emergency medical care that saved Oliver's life, Dr. Tony provided gentle, neurologically-focused adjustments multiple times a day throughout Oliver's six-week NICU stay, and then daily for months once he was home.
Oliver left the hospital six weeks later, off seizure medications, with a clear MRI and EEG. He has not had another seizure since.
That is one child's story and one child's outcome. Every child is different, and individual results vary. But Oliver's journey permanently changed how an entire network of doctors thinks about where seizures may begin, and why the whole nervous system deserves a closer look.
A Seizure Is an Electrical Event, and the Whole System Carries Current
Your child's neurospinal system is the body's wiring: the brain, brainstem, spinal cord, and nerves.
A seizure is often described as a blown fuse or a short in that wiring. But think about how fuses actually work at home. A fuse rarely blows because of the fuse itself. It blows because of the load on the circuit.
Standard care looks almost entirely at the brain, which is the top of that circuit. And that care matters. But just below the brain sits the brainstem, which coordinates breathing, heart rate, digestion, and regulation.
If the load and tension running through the rest of the system are never measured, a major part of your child's picture may stay invisible.
The Perfect Storm: A Pattern We See Again and Again
When we take a truly detailed history with families, the same stressors keep surfacing. At PX Docs, we call this the Perfect Storm:
Significant stress or illness during pregnancy, which can shape how a baby's nervous system develops
A difficult labor and delivery, especially one involving forceps, vacuum extraction, or a C-section
Physical stress on the delicate brainstem and upper neck region during birth
Early struggles that follow: reflux, colic, poor sleep, repeat infections, and rounds of antibiotics
No single event is the cause. It's the stacking of these stressors that may overwhelm a small, developing nervous system.
If you're recognizing parts of your child's story in that list, please be gentle with yourself. Most of these things were out of your control, and you were doing everything you could at every step. Seeing the pattern isn't about blame. It's about finally having a fuller picture.
Why a Clear EEG Doesn't Mean Nothing Is Happening
An EEG measures electrical activity at the surface of the brain during a short window of time. It's genuinely valuable, and it answers an important question very well.
But it was never designed to assess brainstem tension or autonomic regulation.
That's why so many parents leave with clear results and no explanation at all. Others are told the cause is simply unknown and sent home to wait.
A clear test rules some things out. It doesn't rule out neurological stress. And your instinct that something real is going on deserves to be taken seriously.
What We Actually Measure
Before anything else, we take a deep case history, starting with pregnancy, birth, and those early months. Your child's story matters, and it often holds important clues.
Then we use INSiGHT Scans, technology developed and owned by the Chiropractic Leadership Alliance (CLA). These scans are safe, non-invasive, and take about 15 to 20 minutes.
Three scans work together to locate and measure stress and tension in the nervous system. One of them, surface electromyography (sEMG), assesses tension patterns through the brainstem and upper neck. In children with seizure activity, that upper cervical region is very often where we find it.
INSiGHT Scans don't diagnose medical conditions. They help us see what standard neurological testing wasn't designed to show, so we can build a care plan around what your child's nervous system is actually doing.
This Works Alongside Your Medical Team, Never Instead of It
Emergency medicine and neurology save children's lives. That care is essential, and we're deeply grateful for it.
Neurologically-Focused Chiropractic Care addresses something different: the interference itself.
Subluxation is neurological interference in the neurospinal system, not simply a bone out of place. Our goal is to help your child's nervous system regulate and adapt more effectively. Neurologically-Focused Chiropractic Care is not a treatment or cure for seizures or any other condition.
Please never change, reduce, or stop your child's seizure medication without your prescribing physician. Any medication decision belongs to your child's medical doctor. Full stop.
You don't have to choose between your child's medical team and a whole-system approach. The best support for your child brings everyone together.
You Deserve Hope, Answers, and Help
Your child doesn't need one more label. They need someone willing to look at the whole system.
You've been carrying so much: the fear, the appointments, the watching and waiting. You know your child better than anyone, and your questions are worth asking. Keep asking them. You are exactly the advocate your child needs.
Take the Next Step
At Wellnest Chiropractic, our team would be honored to sit down with your family, listen to your child's full story, and show you what we find.
Hope. Answers. Help. That's what your family deserves.
